KABUL: In a recent academic gathering, officials of the Islamic Emirate underscored the importance of facilitating education and employment opportunities for girls and women while operating within the parameters of Sharia law.

The event, themed “Women’s Role,” was organized by the Academy of Science of Afghanistan. Among the speakers was Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanikzai, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, who emphasized the significance of upholding the country’s constitution.

Ensuring justice is paramount. The government should reopen educational institutions for all, functioning in alignment with the constitution. Governance should be firmly rooted in constitutional principles, with officials actively seeking input from the people, Stanikzai stated.

He further advocated for women’s access to education and employment, emphasizing adherence to Sharia law.

Women should play active roles across all segments of society, all while adhering to Sharia principles. Our vision entails granting women freedoms in accordance with Sharia, rather than conforming to Western ideals. It is imperative to safeguard the rights of girls comprehensively, creating an environment conducive to women’s education and work, he added.

Abdul Baqi Haqqani, the head of the National Examination Authority, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the current limitations on women’s access to education and work.

Addressing these challenges is crucial. The foundation of our government should rest on universities, not just seminaries. Elevating the standards of our universities is paramount. Ensuring women’s access to education is a fundamental right that must be upheld, Haqqani remarked. Women possess the potential to contribute significantly across various domains. Failing to cultivate an environment conducive to their involvement would signify our own shortcomings.

“One of the reasons the prophet (PBUH) married many women was to increase the number of women teachers,” said Sheikh Fazaluddin Mahmood, head of the Academy of Science.
