Pakistan Awards Scholarships to Afghan Students for Higher Education

Islamabad: Pakistan has awarded scholarships to Afghan students under the 3rd phase of the Allama Muhammad Iqbal Scholarships Programme for higher education.

The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has initially approved 349 scholarships for Afghan students to pursue their studies at universities across Pakistan, covering various disciplines.  A total of 4,500 scholarships are set to be granted to Afghan students in the third phase of the Iqbal Scholarships Programme.

Among the initial 349 scholarships, 231 have been allocated to male students and 118 to female students, encompassing Bachelors, Masters, and PhD programs. Importantly, there has been fair ethnic representation, including Pashtun, Tajik, Hazara, and Uzb students.

The selection process was carried out based on academic credentials and online interviews conducted by a panel.

The Zero Semester for the selected students is scheduled to begin on May 1, 2024. The HEC ensured that students possess valid visas, passports, and other necessary documentation. Accommodation arrangements will be made for students in hostels located near educational institutions.

Prior to commencing the 3rd Phase of the Allama Iqbal Scholarships Program, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) will engage with the Interim Afghanistan Government.

The 1st and 2nd phases of the Allama Iqbal Scholarships Program have already been completed. The provision of scholarships to Afghan students, including females, has garnered significant appreciation from the Afghan populace, particularly in light of the recent ban on girls’ education.

During the initial two phases of the Scholarship Project, a total of 6,000 Afghan students have been awarded scholarships, reflecting the program’s commitment to facilitating educational opportunities for Afghan youth.
