SYDNEY: In the lead-up to Pakistan’s first Test against Australia, newly appointed captain Shan Masood has confirmed the likely inclusion of pace bowlers Shaheen Afridi and Hasan Ali. However, the composition of the remaining bowling lineup remains contingent on the conditions in Perth.

As the team engages in a four-day tour match against a Prime Minister’s XI in Canberra, Masood’s squad is honing their skills for the upcoming ICC World Test Championship matches in Australia. With bowlers like Babar Azam showcasing their talent alongside the rested Afridi and Ali, the absence of the injured Naseem Shah has opened opportunities for other contenders.

Among the prospects vying for a spot, left-armer Mir Hamza, all-rounder Faheem Ashraf, and the uncapped Khurram Shahzad have exhibited promising performances in Canberra. Additionally, Abrar Ahmed seems poised to assume the role of the sole spin bowling option based on current indications.

While Masood hinted at a tentative preferred bowling lineup, he emphasized the need to assess the pitch, conditions, player fitness, and opposition dynamics before finalizing the XI in Perth. He highlighted the significance of match-ups in modern cricket, especially considering the pivotal roles of experienced bowlers like Shaheen and Hasan.

The team’s considerations also extend to structural permutations, contemplating the inclusion of an all-rounder and defining the spinner’s role within the lineup.

Masood expressed confidence in the potential of 25-year-old spinner Abrar Ahmed, drawing attention to the critical role spinners play in complementing the fast bowlers, particularly in Australian conditions. Reflecting on Ahmed’s past performances, Masood anticipates his pivotal contribution during the tour.

With an undefeated record in their first two Tests of the World Test Championship, Pakistan holds the top spot and aims to sustain their position as they confront the reigning champions in a series of three matches away from home.

The Pakistan squad, led by Masood, comprises a diverse lineup featuring talented players ready to make their mark in the series against Australia.
