Munir Akram, UN Chief Discuss Preparations for Upcoming ‘Summit of Future’

NEW YORK: Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Munir Akram, met with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Friday to discuss preparations for the upcoming “Summit of the Future.”

According to a press release, the meeting, held at the UN Headquarters in New York, both sides expressed optimism regarding the Summit’s potential to address the pressing needs of developing nations.

The UN General Assembly (UNGA) will host the summit from September 22–23, 2024. Officials aim to finalize a concise, action-oriented Outcome Document titled “A Pact for the Future” through intergovernmental negotiations, to be endorsed by Heads of State and Government at the Summit.

Ambassador Akram commended Secretary-General Guterres’ dedication to the sustainable development goals (SDGs) agenda, emphasizing the crucial role of Guterres’ leadership in achieving mutually beneficial outcomes.

During the meeting, Ambassador Akram presented a booklet highlighting the contributions of Pakistani female peacekeepers towards global peace and security under the auspices of the United Nations. The presentation coincided with the United Nations’ celebration of International Women’s Day, marked by various events emphasizing the importance of enhancing women’s roles across all spheres of life.
