ISLAMABAD: In another jolt to the struggling masses, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) Thursday announced a significant hike in the electricity tariff.

The regulatory body has issued a notification of 2.75 rupees per unit increase in electricity tariff, effective for the next three months, imposing a significant burden on consumers amounting to 85.2 billion rupees.

The decision comes as NEPRA approved the second-quarter adjustment for the financial year 2023-24. Despite a request from Distribution Companies (Discos) for a larger hike of 4.43 rupees per unit, NEPRA settled on the 2.75 rupees increment.

The increase, set to be reflected in the bills for April, May, and June, is attributed to different factors impacting the power sector’s operational costs. NEPRA cited maintenance expenses and rising fuel prices as primary reasons for the tariff adjustment.

NEPRA Exempts Lifeline Consumers

However, NEPRA has exempted lifeline consumers utilizing up to fifty units from this price increase, aiming to alleviate the burden on low-consumption households.

The K-Electric consumers will also be subject to this tariff hike, signaling a broader impact across different electricity providers.
