ISLAMABAD: White House has released a trove of files and documents related to the assassination of former United States president JF Kennedy in November 1963.

However, the White House held back some documents related to the high-profile murder, citing national security concerns.

Files and documents

Ina statement, the National Archives said in a statement that a total of 12,879 files and documents were made. It said that 97 per cent of the records, totalling approximately five million pages had now been released from the archives.

In a memorandum, US President Joe Biden said that a limited number of files would be held back at the request of security agencies.

Previously, Central Intelligence Agency and Federal Bureau of Investigation had made requests to withhold documents.

Biden said that temporary postponement of public disclosure of such information was essential to protect against wast harm to the military defence, intelligence operations, law enforcement, and the conduct of foreign relations

The Warren Commission that investigated the killing of JF Kennedy, the charismatic 46-year-old president of the US, determined that the assassination was carried out by Lee Harvey Oswald, a former Marine sharpshooter, while acting alone.

That conclusion has done little to suppress speculations that a more sinister plot could be behind the killing of the US’s 35th president.

JF Kennedy scholars say that the documents still held by the archives were unlikely to contain any bombshell revelations or put to rest the rampant conspiracy theories about the assassination.
