JEDDAH: The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the United Nations Office will be co-hosting an event at the Palais des Nations in Geneva on Friday to commemorate the International Day to Combat Islamophobia worldwide, OIC said.

The commemoration will be arranged in the framework of the implementation of the UNGA resolution calling for strengthened efforts at the international level to foster global talks on the promotion of a culture of peace and tolerance, based on respect for the diversity of religions, beliefs, and human rights.
The event will aim in order to raise awareness on hate speech and intolerance and encourage nations to take the necessary measures to combat Islamophobia. The event will call on United Nations member countries to resolutely tackle the issue of Islamophobia as a specific shape of racism and approve plans of action to combat Islamophobia.

The Secretary General of OIC and the DG of the UN Office in Geneva will provide opening remarks on the event. Several speakers including Ahmed Shaheed, former UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion; Nada Al-Nashif, UN Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights; Alexandre Guessel, Special Representative of the Council of Europe’s Secretary General on hate crimes; envoy Ismail Hakki Musa, Personal Representative of the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office on Combating Intolerance and Taha Ayhan, President of the Islamic Cooperation Youth will also deliver their presentation over the subject during the event.
