JEDDAH: The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) urged global awareness on respecting international humanitarian law amidst increasing armed conflicts and violations by Israeli forces in Gaza and the Occupied Palestinian Authority. This call comes on International Humanitarian Law Day, emphasizing protection for innocents and victims of conflicts and wars.
Established through Resolution 1/42 at the 42nd session of the Council of Foreign Ministers in Kuwait in 2015, International Humanitarian Law Day reaffirms the OIC’s deep commitment to advancing the principles and rules of international humanitarian law.
In light of these circumstances, the General Secretariat urged the global community to exert diplomatic, political, and legal pressure on Israel to adhere to international humanitarian law across all Palestinian Territories. It also called upon Member States to utilize this day to undertake initiatives that bolster awareness and implementation of international humanitarian law, particularly to safeguard vulnerable populations, including children, women, the elderly, refugees, and displaced persons.
Moreover, the OIC urged all societies to foster values of peaceful coexistence, tolerance, and inclusivity, while taking tangible steps to promote and implement international humanitarian law. Many of these principles resonate deeply with the tolerant values inherent in Islam.
