ROME:  Renowned Australian director, Peter Weir, known for “Dead Poets Society” and “The Truman Show”, will be honoured for his career at this year’s Venice Film Festival, said organisers on Thursday.

Weir, 79, got his international breakthrough with arthouse classic “Picnic at Hanging Rock”, in 1975.  He then started to work in Hollywood in the 1980s.

His other notable films include the seafaring epic “Master and Commander” from 2003, with Russell Crowe in the lead role and “Witness”, with Harrison Ford released in 1985.

He received an Honorary Oscar Award in 2022 and will be picked up a Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement in Venice.

Weir in a statement said the Venice Film Festival and its Golden Lion are part of the folklore of film craft and to be selected as a recipient for a lifetime’s work as a director is a matter of great honour.

Venice hosts the oldest film festival in the world on its Lido island. Its 81st edition is scheduled to be held from Aug 28 to Sept 7, and the movies in competition are expected to be announced in July.
