Pakistan Seeks UK Support to Promote Higher Education, Improve Quality

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday expressed the government’s desire to work together with the UK to promote higher education and improve the quality of education in Pakistan.

He expressed his desire during a meeting with the delegation of representatives from leading British universities at the PM House, Islamabad.

The prime minister welcomed the delegation and stressed the importance of promoting quality education, stating that it was the top priority of the government.

He expressed his commitment to ensuring that every child in Pakistan had access to education and said that the federal government was working with the provincial governments to achieve that goal.

The PM said that as Punjab chief minister he had established the Education Endowment Fund in the province, and a similar initiative would also be taken at the federal level.

He said the government was taking measures on an emergency basis for the development of the education sector in the country.

The prime minister, praising British support for Pakistan’s education sector, expressed his desire to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the sectors of education and trade.

The premier that the launch of degree programmes in the universities of Pakistan and Britain on a reciprocal basis was a welcome initiative.

Modern education, particularly science and technology, was a guarantee of development of any nation, he added.

Pakistan-Britain Ties

The PM further said that Pakistan’s bilateral ties with Britain spanned over decades which were further deepening with the passage of time.

He asserted that there should be collaboration in the fields of research and technology in the universities of the two nations. Pakistan wanted to take benefit of the capacity of the British education sector, the PM added.

The visiting delegation expressed its interest in collaborating with Pakistani universities and offered assistance in teacher training and capacity building.

The delegation informed the prime minister that the scope of the Education Gateway Pakistan was being extended which would help enhance bilateral cooperation in the education sector.
