DHAKA: If Hasaranga had not been included in the Test squad, his disciplinary ban would have resulted in him being absent for the beginning of Sri Lanka’s T20 World Cup journey in June. However, by returning to the Test team, despite his absence from first-class cricket for over a year, he ensured that his ban would be fulfilled during Sri Lanka’s upcoming Test matches.

SLC received notification via email from Hasaranga on March 16 expressing his interest in being considered for Test cricket selection moving forward, citing improved fitness levels. Ajantha Mendis, a member of Sri Lanka’s selection committee, disclosed that Hasaranga had communicated his desire to play Test cricket about two weeks prior, stating, “He told us he was open to playing Tests again around that time.” Despite concerns raised, the ICC reportedly engaged with SLC to verify Hasaranga’s Test return. While there is acknowledgment of the circumstances surrounding his decision, it’s noted that no rules have been breached. Notably, Sunrisers Hyderabad were unaware of Hasaranga’s intention to play Tests, potentially affecting his early availability for IPL 2024.

In the 2012 T20 World Cup, Sri Lanka once again exploited a technicality when Kumar Sangakkara temporarily assumed captaincy for a game. This strategic move was aimed at protecting their regular captain, Mahela Jayawardene, who had already faced sanctions for a slow over rate earlier in the tournament. By having Sangakkara step in, the team ensured that any potential sanctions would fall on him rather than Jayawardene, who risked facing a ban due to prior infractions.
