ANKARA:  Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amirabdollahian have discussed recent developments in the region during a phone call, Turkish diplomatic sources said.

According to sources on Friday the phone call was made at the request of the Iranian side, without providing any further information.

Earlier, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said it was monitoring the recent developments in the region closely, and urged all parties to show restraint and refrain from steps that could lead to a broader conflict.

The ministry in the statement said that in light of the latest developments, it is evident that the tensions that were caused by Israel’s illegal attack on the Iranian Embassy in Damascus could turn into a permanent conflict.

It went on to say the priority of the global community should be to stop the genocide in Gaza and to ensure lasting peace in the region by establishing a Palestinian state.

Tension between Iran and Israel escalated on Saturday after Tehran conducted a drone and missile attack in response to the April 1 attack on its diplomatic mission in Syria, which killed seven Iranian military officials, including two high-ranking commanders.

According to US media reports, Israel launched a limited strike inside the territory of Iran early Friday morning. There have been no official comments from Israel on the strikes yet.
