New Taipei City, Taiwan: In Taiwan, recreational beekeeping has grown steadily in popularity over the past decade, with people tending hive boxes in their yards or rooftop gardens.

“I am not in this to make money, it feels good to keep bees but it’s also quite troublesome. You need to love and care about bees,” says Sherry Liu, a retiree and urban beekeeper.

Bee populations around the world are facing disaster from overuse of pesticides, mites and extreme temperatures due to climate change.

That also spells catastrophe for humans, as three-quarters of the world’s main crops depend on bees to act as key pollinators.
