WASHINGTON: US-led coalition forces intercepted four drones and an anti-ship missile launched by Yemen’s Houthis, said the American authorities on Thursday.

A Greek vessel, operating in the Gulf of Aden as part of an EU naval coalition, intercepted a drone off Yemen’s coast early on Thursday, as reported by the Greek general staff.

These incidents mark a resurgence in attacks by the Houthis, following a period of reduced activity. The group had previously launched numerous missile and drone strikes on shipping since November, citing solidarity with Palestinians during the Israel-Hamas conflict.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced via X (formerly Twitter) that a coalition vessel successfully engaged an anti-ship ballistic missile (ASBM) launched from Houthi-controlled areas, likely targeting the MV Yorktown, a US-flagged vessel. CENTCOM also reported the destruction of four drones launched by the Houthis shortly afterwards.

Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree claimed responsibility for the attacks, stating that the group targeted US and Israeli ships, including the MV Yorktown. However, no evidence was provided to support these claims.

The attacks have prompted retaliatory strikes from the United States and Britain, as well as the deployment of Western naval forces to safeguard commercial shipping routes.

In a separate incident, the Greek frigate Hydra intercepted two drones off Yemen’s coast on Thursday, downing one. The Houthis control significant portions of Yemen’s Red Sea coast.
