MANADO, Indonesia: A remote volcano known as Mount Ruang erupted again on Friday in Indonesia’s outermost region, said local authorities.

Columns of dark smoke and lava have forced thousands to evacuate and move the safe places.

A local resident from the island of Tagulandang, which neighbours Mount Ruang told media the volcano erupts again.

Indonesia’s volcanology agency later confirming the eruption said a plume of smoke is covering the peak. It said there was an eruption of Mt Ruang, North Sulawesi at 1706 local time, 0906 GMT.

The agency said the grey ash column was observed on the mountain and leaning towards the south.

Though officials said Ruang had started to calm, authorities issued the highest alert level on a four-tiered system, which shows high volcanic activity.

They also asked residents to remain more than six kilometres from the crater.

Indonesia, a vast archipelago nation, experiences regular seismic and volcanic activity because of its position on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”.
