Washington Expresses Concern Regarding Further Spread of Gaza War to Lebanon

BEIRUT: The United States Embassy in Lebanon said on Thursday that Washington is concerned regarding “the possibility of a further spillover” of the war in the Gaza Strip.

The embassy said in a statement via social media that Washington “does not want to see conflict in Lebanon, where escalation would have severe consequences for regional security and peace and for the well-being of the people of Lebanon.”

The statement said that the US embassy also stressed that “restoring tranquility along the Lebanon- Israel frontier is of utmost significance, and fully executing UNSC Resolution 1701 is a key part of this effort.” Resolution 1701 was approved 17 years ago with the aim of resolving the 2006 war between Hezbollah and Israel.

The embassy said that the UN Interim Force in Lebanon also plays a significant role in keeping the peace along the Blue Line, the demarcation line between Israel and Lebanon made by the United Nations in June 2000, and “we expect all sides will also ensure the safety of peacekeepers.”

As per media reports, since Oct. 8 Israeli shelling has targeted several towns inside southern Lebanon, killing over 100 people in the country.

The Gaza Health Ministry said that over 15,000 Palestinian people have been killed in Israeli brutal attacks since October 7. The Health Ministry said that more than 6,150 children have also been killed in the war in Gaza. As per media reports, over 36,000 Palestinian people have been injured by Israeli strikes in the Gaza Strip.
