MINSK: The world has marked International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day to remember those who died after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster on April 26, 1986.

On this day, people all over the world recall Chernobyl, a sacrifice of those who risked their lives to stop the radiation disaster.

Designated by the United Nations General Assembly, this day serves as a vital reminder of the catastrophic consequences of the Chernobyl nuclear accident and the courageous efforts made to mitigate its effects.

The explosion at Unit 4 resulted in the complete destruction of the reactor, triggering fires and the release of radioactive substances. The fallout spread over a vast area, affecting more than 20 countries, with Belarus bearing a significant portion of the contamination.

In response, Belarus, supported by international partners, has undertaken extensive efforts to address the aftermath of the disaster. With over $19.5 billion allocated since 1996, progress has been made in implementing protective measures and rehabilitating affected areas.

Significantly, the contamination of Belarusian territory with caesium-137 has declined by almost half over 38 years. Scientists project that radioactive contamination will be eliminated from the last settlement by 2090, with the majority of affected areas expected to be free from contamination by 2030-2040.

Despite the challenges posed by Chernobyl, the collective efforts of Belarus and its partners demonstrate resilience and commitment to restoring affected communities and safeguarding the environment for future generations.
