QUETTA: Chairman of the Senate Standing Committee on Petroleum Senator Mohammad Abdul Qadir said on Thursday that the Chinese government is keen on initiating development projects that will benefit the residents of Gwadar, a port city in Pakistan’s Balochistan.

Talking to state-run news agency Associated Press of Pakistan (APP), he said that it is the government’s duty to identify suitable areas for Chinese-led development projects aimed at benefiting the local populace in Gwadar.

Expressing optimism about the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a key component of the Belt and Road Initiative, Senator Qadir highlighted the government’s commitment to completing the project despite previous delays.

“PML-N is recognized for its pro-development and business-friendly policies, and they take pride in CPEC,” he remarked, foreseeing CPEC’s growth and increased significance in the future.

The senator stressed the importance of establishing industrial zones, noting that the Chinese government is prepared to develop such zones. He highlighted the potential for local industries to thrive alongside these developments, potentially saving significant transportation costs for the government.

Senator Qadir emphasized the necessity of providing special initiatives to support local industries, including incentives for traders and investors, as well as ensuring essential utilities such as power, water, and security to ensure the success of ongoing projects in Gwadar.
