ISLAMABAD: Google has announced stringent measures to enhance online security, revealing plans to disable “millions of specific” Gmail accounts soon. The tech giant issued an urgent deadline for Gmail users, indicating that certain accounts inactive for the past two years could be deleted by December 2023.

The policy primarily targets accounts that have been dormant for at least two years, posing a potential security risk due to their vulnerability to cyber threats like phishing scams, spam, and account hijacking. Active accounts used for regular access to Gmail, Docs, Calendar, and Photos are not affected by the update.

Google Aims to Enhance Security

Google emphasized the goal of enhancing security and protecting users from potential risks associated with outdated and inactive accounts. In its statement, Google outlined the criteria for potential deletion: “If a Google Account has not been used or signed into for at least 2 years, we may delete the account and its contents.” This includes data stored within Google Workspace, encompassing Gmail, Docs, Drive, Meet, Calendar, and Google Photos.

To prevent the risk of account deletion, Google advised users to remain vigilant and follow straightforward steps. The company will send multiple notifications to both the personal and recovery email addresses provided by users before initiating the deletion process.

Users concerned about the potential deactivation of their Gmail accounts are urged to log in before the impending December deadline to ensure the preservation of their accounts and associated data.
