DUBLIN: Cricket Ireland has decided to indefinitely postpone their planned home white-ball series against Australia later this year due to anticipated significant financial losses. Originally, Australia was slated to visit Ireland for three ODIs and one T20I in August, followed by matches in England.

However, Cricket Ireland’s Chief Executive Officer, Warren Deutrom, disclosed during The Final Word podcast that the organization projected a substantial six-figure financial deficit if the series proceeded as scheduled. Deutrom explained that the limited number of international cricket venues in Ireland necessitated the opening of Malahide Cricket Ground, resulting in considerable financial implications.

Despite Australia being a significant broadcast rights contributor, the anticipated revenue wouldn’t cover the production costs of hosting the matches at Malahide. Consequently, Cricket Ireland prioritized fiscal prudence and opted to shelve the series, highlighting their commitment to investing in women’s and age-group cricket and emphasizing their broader international cricket calendar.

They remain committed to rescheduling fixtures with Australia in the future. Meanwhile, Ireland’s upcoming cricket engagements include hosting Pakistan for a three-match T20I series in May, all to be held at Clontarf in Dublin.
