DAMASCUS: An Israeli attack on northern Syria’s Aleppo province has killed around 36 Syrian soldiers, a war monitor said on Friday.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights war monitor said that the strike killed “36 Syrian soldiers” and targeted a location “near rockets depots”.

Syrian official news agency SANA also confirmed the strike and said the pre-dawn attack killed and injured military personnel and civilians.

SANA cited a Syrian army source as saying that “at 1:45 a.m., the Israeli enemy carried out an air strike from Athriya, southeast of Aleppo,” saying that “military personnel and civilians” have been killed and injured in the strike.

However, the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights war monitor said Hezbollah missile depots attacked in the attack were in Aleppo’s southern suburb of Jibreen close to the Aleppo Airport. According to the Observatory explosions are still heard two hours following the Israeli attacks.

Israel did not issue any statement over the strikes. Israel often launches attacks on Iran-linked groups in Syria but rarely admits them.

Earlier on Thursday, Syrian official media reported air attacks near Damascus saying it injured two people.

Aleppo, Syria’s main city and once its commercial hub, has come under such strikes in the past that led to the closure of its airport. However, Friday’s attack did not affect the airport in the city.
