TEHRAN: Pakistan and Iran on Tuesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the supply of an additional 100 megawatts of electricity to fulfill the daily power needs of Gwadar.
On the instructions of Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, Minister for Energy Engineer Khurram Dastgir Khan visited Iran from March 10 to March 13.
Minister Khurram Dastgir held meetings with Iranian Minister of Energy Ali Akber Mehrabian. During the meeting, both Ministers emphasized developing bilateral relations between Iran and Pakistan and extending cooperation in the energy field.
Both Ministers showed interest in initiating new joint ventures in the field of energy.
Minister Khurram’s visit aimed to finalize an agreement of power supply to Gwadar, which was initiated during the Minister’s earlier visit in June 2022. In a very short time, the electricity transmission line has been laid from Iran to Gwadar.
Talks to finalize electricity supply agreement
For the finalization of the agreement of power supply, three sessions were held by technical teams in which detailed discussions were held. As a result of these meetings, the agreement was signed on March 13th between Pakistan & Iran to provide 100 megawatts of electricity.
The project will be inaugurated at the earliest. This project will ensure uninterrupted supply to Gwadar and lay the foundations of a prosperous Gwadar.
During his visit, the Honorable Minister also attended a ceremony organized by the Embassy of Pakistan, Tehran, to commemorate Pakistan National Day.
He addressed the Iranian civil and military dignitaries and diplomats who attended the ceremony. In his remarks, the Guest of Honor, the Honorable Minister, said that Pakistan and Iran are two fraternal nations with indissoluble bonds of common faith, cultural affinity, and shared history. He hoped that the bilateral relations between the two fraternal nations will continue the upward trajectory.
Minister Mr. Khurram Dastagir extended condolences on the loss of human lives in the earthquake at Turkiye, Syria, and Khoye, Iran.
The Minister extended felicitations to the leadership of Iran and Saudi Arabia on reviving their diplomatic ties.
Iranian Minister for Energy Ali Akber Mehrabian was the Chief guest on the occasion. He stressed that there is a lot of potential for improving bilateral relations between Pakistan and Iran.
