President’s Cup Cricket Starts Today

LAHORE: The President’s Cup, a 50-over-a-side tournament, will see Abbottabad and Rawalpindi as hosts for 24 matches from April 24th to May 12th. Seven prominent departments will partake in the event. Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL), victors of the prestigious President’s Trophy, aspire to cap off the 2023-24 season with another triumph.

Joining SNGPL are Pakistan Television (PTV), State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA), Khan Research Laboratories (KRL), Higher Education Commission (HEC), and Ghani Glass.

In a single round-robin format, the seven teams will vie for supremacy, with the top four progressing to the semi-finals after 21 league encounters. Shoaib Akhtar Stadium, Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, and Abbottabad Cricket Stadium will witness the league stage, while venues for the three knockout fixtures will be announced in due course.

WAPDA will be led by Ahmed Shehzad, SBP by Usman Salahuddin, KRL by Rohail Nazir, Ghani Glass by Moeez Ghani, HEC by Mohammad Huraira, and PTV and SNGPL by Shamyl Hussain and Saud Shakeel, respectively.

The tournament boasts a total prize purse of PKR 2.5 million, with the champions clinching PKR 1.5 million and the coveted trophy.

Abdullah Khurram Niazi, Director of Domestic Cricket Operations, expressed satisfaction with the successful organization of the first-class tournament and highlighted the importance of reinstating departmental cricket, aligning with the PCB Chairman’s vision of revitalizing domestic cricket for the betterment of the sport.
