BRUSSELS: Facebook owner Meta Platforms and social media firm Snap have been given a December 1 deadline by the European Union (EU) to give more information and details on how they provide protection to children from unlawful and negative content, the European Commission stated.

The demand for information on the steps the firms have taken to enhance the protection of children comes a day following a similar message by the EU to TikTok and YouTube.

The European Commission last month also sent firms including X, Meta, and TikTok immediate orders to detail steps taken to counter the spread of information related to violent content, hate speech and terrorism on their platforms.

The Commission can open probes into the firms if it is not satisfied with their replies. Under new online content and information rules known as the Digital Services Act that came into force recently, major online social media and digital platforms are needed to do more to take down harmful content or risk fines as much as 6% of their global income.
