MADRID: Spanish military aircrafts air dropped 26 tonnes of humanitarian assistance to Palestinians in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday.

The Foreign Ministry said that besides airdrops Madrid also called on Israel to open land border crossings to stop a famine.

The ministry in a statement said the operation carried out jointly with Jordan and co-financed by the European Union, dropped more than 11,000 of food to end the catastrophe faced by 1.1 million people in Gaza.

It added Spain presses on the opening of the land border crossings as an indispensable measure to avert situation of famine.

Aid organizations said the airdrops are as inefficient as they are dangerous. Meanwhile Jordan’s Army said five more drops were carried out on Wednesday with support from Egypt, the UAE, Germany and Spain.

The US also committed to continue airdrops with US Central Command confirming it had dropped 46,000 powdered meals in north of Gaza on Monday.

US Air Force Lt. Col. Jeremy Anderson during a drop earlier this month said that the aid delivered by air is a drop in the bucket.

Washington insisted on Tuesday it was working tirelessly to enhance the flow of assistance into Gaza by land as well as setting up a sea corridor.

Last week, a UN report said a famine was imminent in Gaza and likely to occur by May in north of the area and could spread across the enclave by July.
