BEIJING: TikTok, the popular video-sharing platform, has announced plans to launch a new platform called TikTok Notes, aimed at expanding its reach and competing with Meta-owned Instagram.

Owned by Chinese company ByteDance, TikTok revealed that the new platform will offer users a dedicated space for sharing images and text content.

The move comes amidst heightened competition in the technology sector globally, with companies like Meta and Elon Musk’s X vying for dominance. Last year, Meta introduced Threads in a bid to rival X, formerly known as Twitter.

Tech Crunch reports that TikTok Notes is anticipated to be the name of the new application, which will focus on facilitating photo posts.

Users of the video-sharing platform have already begun receiving pop-up notifications about the upcoming launch of TikTok Notes, prompting them to share their existing photo posts on the new app. However, users will have the option to choose not to share their image posts on the platform.

In response to inquiries about the new app, TikTok stated, “As part of our continued commitment to innovating the TikTok experience, we’re exploring ways to empower our community to create and share their creativity with photos and text in a dedicated space for those formats.”

The development of TikTok Notes coincides with ongoing discussions in the United States regarding potential legislation that could require ByteDance to divest its stakes to American investors or face regulatory action.
