6.2 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Northern Japan

TOKYO: A strong 6.2 magnitude earthquake shook northern Japan on Sunday, the United States Geological Survey reported; however, there were no reports of human loss or property damage.

The shake struck Hokkaido Island at 6:55 pm local time (0955 GMT). The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) ruled out the risk of tsunami.

The USGS said that it struck just off the Urakawa-cho town’s town in the Hokkaido region at a depth of 123 kilometers, according to AFP.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage, according to Japan’s national broadcaster NHK.

Japan’s nuclear regulator said that there were also no issues reported from nuclear facilities in the region.

A local authority told NHK that the caused strong shaking that lasted for twenty to thirty seconds.

The official said that the earthquake shook sideways first, then gradually strengthened.

Frightening earthquake

He added that the shake felt like a long time, and it was strange and frightening.
