Commerce Ministry Organizes Workshop on General Agreement on Trade in Services

ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Commerce and the World Trade Organization (WTO) have jointly organized a four-day ‘National Workshop on General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS)’ in partnership with the Pakistan Regional Economic Integration Activity (PREIA), a USAID-funded program.

The objective of the workshop was to equip participants with a better understanding of the services trade negotiations.

Over Seventeen (17) Federal and Provincial Ministries and Departments attended the workshop.

Markus Jelitto, Senior Counsellor with the Trade in Services and Investment Division at the WTO, and Usman Ali Khilji, Head of Asia and Pacific Desk, Institute for Training and Technical Cooperation (ITTC) of the WTO, explained various aspects of the General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS) to the participants about.

The Federal Minister for Commerce Minister also attended the closing ceremony of the workshop.

Expressing his views on the occasion, the minister stressed the need for continuous capacity building of government officers to meet the changing international trade dynamics.

He underscored the role of the services sector and its linkage with domestic commerce, particularly the role of provincial governments.

In the end, the commerce minister presented certificates and shields to the resource persons and participants.
