IMF Likely to Back Uzbekistan’s WTO Membership

TASHKENT:  Uzbekistan and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) have held discussions regarding the country’s accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO), local media reported on Saturday.

The talks held during a meeting between Laziz Kudratov, Uzbekistan’s Minister of Investment, Industry, and Trade, and Yasser Abdih, the head of the IMF delegation. Both parties discussed the IMF’s assistance for Uzbekistan’s WTO membership, as well as efforts to intensify and successfully conclude discussions with WTO members.

The IMF team recognized Uzbekistan’s achievements in achieving long-term economic growth and increasing foreign investment in key sectors of the economy.  In response, the Uzbek side highlighted progress in implementing the country’s state investment strategy, including efforts to create a favorable business environment, protect investors’ rights, and other key areas.

The IMF representatives reiterated the fund’s readiness to support Uzbekistan in enhancing the institutional framework for trade regulation and improving the investment climate to ensure the effective implementation of reforms and the achievement of strategic goals.
