ISLAMABAD: Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Haji Ghulam Ali on Tuesday announced May 28 as the date for the provincial assembly elections following a meeting with President Dr Arif Alvi and with officials of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
Earlier this morning, the Governor held meetings with officials from the ECP and was later called by President Dr Arif Alvi to discuss issues related to the general elections for the provincial assembly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly was dissolved in January by the then set up led by PTI, followed by the current caretaker setup. However, despite the Supreme Court’s orders, a scheduled date was not finalized for the polls.
Alvi Advises Ghulam Ali to announce Polls in KP
During the meeting with the president, Dr Alvi advised the Governor about announcing a date for the elections in KP after consultations with the ECP to avoid any legal issues, as a period of two weeks had almost passed by.
President Arif Alvi also directed Governor KP to implement the apex court’s order in letter and spirit as per directions.
Earlier on March 1, in a split verdict, the Supreme Court ruled that elections for Punjab and KP assemblies should be held within 90 days.
Later on March 8, the meeting between the electoral body and senior officials, including Governor Ali, went undecided as it failed to provide a date for the elections despite the orders given by the Supreme Court.
