BRATISLAVA, Slovakia: Slovakia’s populist government adopted a controversial law on Wednesday, affecting the RTVS public television and radio broadcaster, which it accuses of lacking impartiality.

One of the main amendments will see the RTVS general director elected by a new administrative council consisting of nine members – five nominate by the parliament and other four by the culture minister.

The move has been severely criticised by the opposition and media rights groups such as Reporters Without Borders (RSF).

“RTVS will be transformed into a disinformation media that publishes pro-government propaganda,” said the right-wing SaS opposition party.

In February, RSF warned against threats to press freedom in the country, urging the populist government to protect media-men.
