NAIROBI, Kenya: The Uganda Cricket Association (UCA) on Tuesday named former India first-class cricketer Abhay Sharma as the new head coach of the men’s national team ahead of the Twenty20 World Cup.

Nicknamed the Cricket Cranes, the Uganda men’s team has qualified for the competition for the first time, joining 20 teams in the tournament, which will be co-hosted by the United States and the West Indies from June 1.

The UCA announced Sharma’s appointment on a three-year contract in a statement on its website, saying he brings knowledge and expertise to lead Cranes Cricket into its next chapter of success.

According to UCA, Sharma has previously coached the India A team and the India U-19 national team, as well as the Indian women’s cricket team and the Delhi Ranji Trophy team.

“I am here to contribute to the team’s aspirations, which include defeating the top sides in the world in the upcoming World Cup,” the 54-year-old Sharma said in the statement.

He identified the areas need to be improved saying that Uganda Cricket has performed well in the last 12 months but there are areas, particularly fielding, where they need to improve.
