NYON: In a significant announcement made by UEFA on Tuesday, the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland have been chosen as co-hosts for the Euro 2028 football tournament. This decision comes after Turkey withdrew its bid for the 2028 event, paving the way for Britain and Ireland to secure the hosting rights. The joint bid, which ran unopposed, received official approval at a meeting held in Switzerland.

Following this, UEFA also revealed that Italy and Turkey will be the joint hosts for the Euro 2032 tournament, in a bid that highlighted their shared enthusiasm for the sport. The Turkish Football Federation expressed their delight at being selected as hosts, emphasizing their commitment to providing fans with an unparalleled European Championship experience.

This announcement comes on the heels of FIFA’s recent decision to award the 2030 World Cup to Morocco, Portugal, Spain, Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay, marking the centenary celebration of the prestigious tournament. Additionally, Saudi Arabia has expressed its intentions to host the 2034 World Cup.

Euro 2028 Matches in England and Scotland

For the Euro 2028 event, England and Scotland will play host to 12 matches, with six venues in England, including London, Manchester, Liverpool, Newcastle, and Birmingham. Belfast, Dublin, Glasgow, and Cardiff are also set to host matches during the tournament. This marks a significant moment for England, as the last major men’s tournament they hosted was the European Championship in 1996.

Italy, a nation with a rich footballing history, hosted matches in Rome during Euro 2020 but has not hosted a tournament on its own since the 1990 World Cup. Turkey, on the other hand, has never been awarded a major international competition before, making the 2032 Euro a historic event for the country.

Meanwhile, Russia’s bid to host either the 2028 or 2032 Euro was rejected by UEFA due to the suspension of Russian clubs and national teams from all UEFA competitions following the conflict in Ukraine.
