DUBLIN: Former US House Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi on Tuesday said that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu must resign, adding that he has been an obstacle to peace for years.

She made the remarks in an interview with Raidió Teilifís Éireann, an Irish public broadcaster during a visit to Ireland.

Democrats, including President Biden, have become critical of Netanyahu’s policies as Israel continues its military campaign in Gaza.

She said though Israel has a right to protect itself, her party rejects the policy and the practice of Netanyahu.

Pelosi said Netanyahu should resign as he is ultimately responsible for the current situation in the region.

Netanyahu, obstacle to peace

Former Speaker to a question said that Netanyahu has been an obstacle to the two-state solution.

Pelosi has also recently asked the Biden administration to stop the transfer of weapons to Israel.

Pelosi is not the only Democrat calling for a new leadership in Israel. Last month, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said Netanyahu had lost and demanded elections to choose a new government.

The Senate advanced a foreign assistance package on Tuesday, ensuring an additional $26.4 billion to Israel. Earlier the House approved the $95 billion in foreign assistance in the form of four individual bills over the weekend.

According to the Gaza health ministry, more than 34,000 Palestinians – mostly women and children – have been killed during Israel’s relentless bombardment in the besieged enclave.
