Rain Spell to Continue till Monday: PMD

ISLAMABAD:  The recent rain spell which is continuing in most areas of Pakistan, due to a westerly wave since Friday, is likely to last till Monday, Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said on Saturday.

This system is likely to bring widespread rain and thunderstorms, especially impacting Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Galiyat, Gilgit-Baltistan, Murree, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

In upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Kashmir, heavy rainfall is expected in few places. The temperature recorded this morning in major cities includes 17 degrees Celsius in Islamabad, 22 in Lahore, 26 in Karachi, 20 in Peshawar, 12 in Quetta, 14 in Gilgit, 09 in Murree, and 16 in Muzaffarabad.

The Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has echoed concerns, advising citizens to take necessary precautions during the new spell of rain. Areas including Murree, Guliyat, Rawalpindi, Attock, Jhelum, Chakwal, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujranwala, Gujarat, Hafizabad, Sialkot, Narowal, Lahore, Kasur, Okara, Faisalabad, Toba Tek Singh, Jhang, Khushab, Sargodha, Mianwali, Pakpattan, and Sahiwal are expected to be affected.

The PDMA has emphasized the need for caution, highlighting that most districts will experience rain accompanied by hail. The administration is on high alert, with clear instructions from the Chief Minister of Punjab that negligence will not be tolerated.

DG PDMA further advised ensuring proper drainage in low-lying areas and urged citizens to stay away from electric poles during the storm to avoid accidents. Additionally, people are advised to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel. In case of emergencies, citizens are encouraged to call the PDMA Helpline at 1129.
